UNIBEN Cult Crisis: Management Suspends Academic Activities

The authorities of University of Benin (UNIBEN) has suspended all academic activities in the school temporarily due to the crisis that erupted between suspected cultist groups and indigenes of Ekosodin community in Benin, the Edo state.

According to a student of the institution, the crisis started at about 7:45pm on Thursday when cultists stormed students’ hostel in Ekosodin with different harmful weapons, ranging from axes to guns of different brands, in what was believed to be a reprisal attack, after two students were allegedly killed by a rival cult group in the area.

The source said that the hoodlums were asking for the names of some students in the area and threatened to burn down the hostel if they were not provided. This caused a stampede as the cultists attacked students around the area wounding some and reportedly killing some.

The crisis however took another dimension Friday morning when the cultists attempted to enter inside the campus but was prevented by security men stationed at the school gate.

As a result of the crisis, the institution has issued a notice to all students concerning the suspension of the second semester examination earlier slated for Friday, 21st of November till Monday, 24th of November.
