Tension in FUPRE as Students Protest School Fees Increase

The students of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, took to the streets yesterday to protest school fees increase by the school’s management.

The protest which began peacefully inside the university campus later deteriorated into blocking the ever-busy  East-West road from the Warri axis with bonfire, planks, used tyres, thereby causing a huge traffic jam.

Speaking with reporters, the FUPRE SUG vice president, Mr Valentine Ekanem, stated that the management increased the fees for returning students from N26,400 to N55,000, while the new students are to pay fees ranging from N46,000 to N90,000

He said that the representatives of the students and the school management were involved in several negotiation but to no avail.

The students called on the President, Goodluck Jonathan to intervene so that there will be an immediate reversal of the policy
