The management of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, has closed down the institution following a violent protest by the students over school fees hike.
It was alleged that the polytechnic management asked the returning
students to pay the same fee they paid as freshers, which amounted to
N50,000 and N60,000 for ND2 and HND2 students respectively.
This caused outrage from the students who queried why they had to
pay the fresher’s fee which is usually high because of the various dues
and registrations to pay for.
They took to the streets and blocked the Ozoro stretch of the
Ughelli-Asaba Express Road, harassing some of their co-students who had
chosen to ignore the protest.
The protest turned violent when the men of the Nigeria Police Force,
Ozoro Division tried to stop the protest, leading to the burning of the
institution’s security house.
However, the Police succeeded in dispersing the students and arrested those who took part in destruction of properties.
Students are to proceed on a one-week break.
