ASUU Urge Lagos Gov To Constitute LASU Visitation Panel

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Zone, has urged the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode to immediately constitute a visitation panel to the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

Dr Adesola Nasir, ASUU Zonal Coordinator, who made the plea at a media briefing in Lagos, said that the visitation panel was expected to look into the affairs of the institution in the past five years.

He said that the crises in the university between the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, and the three staff unions could not be ignored.

“We wish to use this opportunity to plead with the visitor, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, to take steps to institute a policy direction, which would emanate from a visitation to LASU.

“The visitor should, thereafter, constitute a Governing Council, consisting of experienced men and women of deserved honour, arising from proven integrity with clear-headed understanding of the operations of the university,” he said.

Nasir advised the governor to commence the process for the appointment of a new vice-chancellor, while enforcing due process without interference.

“ASUU will not allow someone who has failed to continue in the system and fail again.

“I do not know of any university in the world where the VC is unable to enter the university, and still lays claim to the leadership of the institution,” he said.

Nasir said that the union was also aware of some clandestine moves to unleash some ill-informed student groups mainly from outside LASU, to foment additional crisis in the university.

He urged parents, guardians and the general public to advise such students not to allow themselves to be used for selfish purposes. (NAN)
