The games which was earlier scheduled to commence on 15th October eventually started fully on the 17th day of October, 2015 after a few hiccups and attracted 26 universities across West Africa. In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the host University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, welcomed athletes and guests to the University, stating that the idea to host the games is based on the University's philosophy of restoring the dignity of man.
The games started with a football match between the host university (UNN) and the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). The UNN team won the opening game by a lone goal against their opponents, OAU. However, it was the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) team who took the shine in the male football category. The ESUT team beat the host (UNN) 4-3 on penalties in a controversial Semi-final match, then went ahead to beat University of Calabar (UNICAL) in the final match.
