Students of the Department of Mass Communication, Covenant University (CU), Ota have been urged to be distinct so as to make positive changes in Nigeria.
This charge came at a seminar organized by the Covenant University
Communication Students’ Association (CUCSA) tagged “Communicate, Connect
and Create” on Thursday, March 26 2015 at the Centre for
Entrepreneurial Development Studies (CEDS) Multipurpose hall.
The first Guest Speaker and Managing Editor, online and special
publication, the Nation Newspaper, Mr Lekan Otufodurin spoke on
“Preparing Mass Communication in a New Media Age”. He encouraged the
students to lay a good foundation for themselves by developing their
skills at an early age.
According to him, developing their skills at an early period makes
them relevant and increases their chances of being employed, despite the
stiff competition in the labour market. He also spoke on the need to
review the Mass Communication curriculum, stating that it is old and
also a current threat to the development of Mass Communication.
Another guest speaker and CEO, Etu Odi Communications, Mr. Uzoma
Okoye, spoke on the topic “Get ahead in the creative industry”. In his
presentation, Mr. Okoye stressed the need for creativity, urging the
students to seek unconventional methods of setting themselves apart from
their peers. “The ability to make yourself distinct from others is what
creates a pathway for a successful career,” he stated. The students
were also taught the secrets of writing an attention-grabbing Curriculum
Vitae.
While advising the students, Mr. Okoye implored them to make
themselves indispensable in any organization they find themselves. He
also identified creativity, constant self-development and attitude as
the vital determinants of success in the Mass Communication industry.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the President of the Covenant
University Communication Students’ Association (CUCSA), Mr Samuel Akpan,
encouraged the students to tap from the reservoir of knowledge of the
speakers and be ready to practicalize whatever they learn from the
conference, so as to make a change in their environments.
The objective of the seminar was to enable students to gain additional knowledge on the practical aspects of the industry.
